Job Description

St. Augustine Preparatory Academy is a K4-12 Christian School on Milwaukee’s South side that opened in the summer of 2017. The school is a student-centered environment where young learners take ownership of their education not only in academics, but also physical health, creativity, and faith. Our graduates will go on to achieve their highest potential and make our city, and ultimately the world, a better place. The school currently enrolls about 1,300 students.


Position Description

St. Augustine Preparatory Academy (Aug Prep) is seeking a Chief External Relations Officer (CXO) to join our dynamic executive leadership team working to instill hope in our community and families by equipping our students to glorify God in all that they do today, tomorrow and as future leaders of our city and nation. Leading Aug Prep’s development and communication team as well as working with teams across the organization, the CXO reports directly to the CEO. This position requires a Christ-centered, entrepreneurial and creative individual with exceptional written and verbal communication skills. The right candidate is highly relational, strategic, goal-oriented, and demonstrates maturity in decision-making. As an ambassador and steward of the Aug Prep organization and mission, the CXO will play a key role in developing and deepening relationships with community leaders, families, donors and champions in the Milwaukee area as well as nationally.


Core Responsibilities:

Aug Prep Leadership

  • Model deep connection and belief in Aug Prep’s vision, mission and four pillars
  • Participate as a member of Aug Prep’s executive leadership team developing and leading implementation of the school’s strategy and priorities in partnership with the board of directors
  • Engage Aug Prep staff, students, families and other stakeholders to create development and communication strategies that bring the organization’s mission to life
  • Build and lead a high-performing development and communications team
  • Demonstrate exceptional team and people management skills; deep commitment to and belief in developing others; ability to influence, inspire trust and motivate others to achieve objectives, both internally and externally
  • Effectively lead change initiatives while thoughtfully considering the impact of decisions, and facilitating resolutions that prioritize Aug Prep’s mission and our students


  • Establish, manage and lead the implementation of Aug Prep’s overarching fundraising strategies to annually support our work with students, raise capital for Phase II growth and identify post-secondary scholarship opportunities for Aug Prep graduates; ensure alignment of fundraising efforts to key Aug Prep priorities
  • Research corporations, foundations and other organizations locally and nationally to determine alignment with their philanthropic priorities and continue building the Aug Prep stewardship base
  • Annually develop and lead execution of Aug Prep’s fundraising calendar, including dates for solicitations, proposals, reports, activities and events
  • Maintain long-term relationships with existing donors; identify and build relationships with new and prospective donors
  • Ensure timely and accurate gift accounting and acknowledgements, with a focus on customized or personalized stewardship for Aug Prep donors
  • Oversee database accuracy and analysis that delivers actionable insights


  • Work across the Aug Prep organization to support communication best practice implementation with staff, students, families, partners, donors and other stakeholders
  • Work with the leadership team to identify organizational challenges and communications opportunities/solutions; define and execute appropriate strategies to support them
  • Expand Aug Prep’s voice in Milwaukee as well as the organization’s influence and impact on key issues facing the organization and communities we serve
  • Serve as communications counselor to Aug Prep leadership.  Be responsible for strategic and crisis communications, issues management and organizational context for decisions
  • Lead all communication initiatives, including preparation of media projects, press releases and announcements, newsletters (internal and external), talking points/key messages, and generating media opportunities that support Aug Prep’s mission and vision for the future
  • Manage all media contacts and serve as liaison between media outlets and our organization; serve as spokesperson when appropriate
  • Oversee strategic management of our core communications platforms including website, social media and newsletters
  • Work with partner PR and marketing agencies on specific organizational initiatives



  • The candidate must be mission-driven, demonstrate the highest integrity, and be able to live the values, beliefs and culture of Aug Prep
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent required. Specialization in fundraising, marketing/communications, nonprofit management or related field preferred
  • The ideal candidate will have at least seven years of progressively responsible experience in similar or related roles
  • Strong leader with vision, high energy and the ability to motivate, lead and inspire the board, staff and donors.  Exemplary relationship-building and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated and effective written and verbal communication skills.  Exceptional communicator, internally and externally, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a high performing team.  Must be flexible, take initiative, and operate at a high level of productivity. Ability to collaborate, delegate and manage up a must
  • Excellent organization, project management and time management skills with attention to detail and follow through
  • Experience and comfort in cultivating and sustaining relationships with key supporters and stakeholders in Milwaukee, including the media, elected officials, peer and partner education organizations, donors, and prominent community leaders
  • Highly confidential and professional in all aspects of professional interactions
  • Must, at all times, possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license and have access to a vehicle which she/he can use during the workday for job responsibilities which require local travel
