Teresa Buss began her career as a high school art educator in Milwaukee, WI after receiving her Bachelors of Fine Arts in Art Education from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2005. She successfully taught a variety of students within a challenging high school until she decided to start her journey to obtain her Masters of Science in Art Therapy.
In 2011, while completing her masters, Ms. Buss opted to serve as a special education paraprofessional inside a high school in Milwaukee to explore how she could combine her previous knowledge as an art educator with that of her art therapy training to assist students with extreme emotional and behavioral needs. It was during this time that Ms. Buss developed and implemented a resource room called the Zen Den, allowing both special and regular education students the opportunity to express their selves using a variety of art modalities. It was in this space Ms. Buss discovered her passion is to create safe spaces that welcome and encourage self-care and community building in order to achieve goals.
Ms. Buss operated the Zen Den full time for three years, which she offered to both students and staff while implementing a wide variety of therapeutic tools rooted in trauma research and mindfulness practices. Additionally, Ms. Buss is passionate about the connections that exist between trauma, the body, and neuroscience and pursued a yoga instructor license in the summer of 2018.
Ms. Buss joined Augustine Prep in August 2018 as an Art Therapist. She will work closely with students, administrative staff, mental health supports, teachers, and parents to continue developing an integrative model for education in Milwaukee.
