Visual Arts
The Visual Arts program at Aug Prep is designed to guide students from their first creative explorations to the development of refined artistic skills and personal expression. Each stage builds upon the last, ensuring a strong foundation and continuous growth throughout their K4–12 journey.
Lower Elementary (K4–2)
Lower Elementary students engage with visual arts through a structured program that emphasizes fine motor development, imaginative expression, and the foundational elements of art. They are encouraged to explore diverse materials and to apply creativity thoughtfully as they complete each project. Art is integrated within a five-elective rotation, ensuring balanced exposure across subjects. Additionally, the school hosts an annual art exhibition where families are invited to view and celebrate students’ work.
Upper Elementary (3–5)
Upper Elementary Visual Arts offers students a chance to deepen their creativity by exploring both 2D and 3D art forms. They study famous artists both past and present, while applying the Elements and Principles of Art through the creation of artwork that represent landscapes, portraits, and still life. Students can identify realism and abstraction while exploring various styles of art. Using a wide variety of media, including pencil, oil pastels, tempera, watercolors, clay, and mixed media, students build their artistic skills and develop personal portfolios. Opportunities extend beyond the classroom through the Junior Docent School Program with the Milwaukee Art Museum, before-school Art Club, and community showcases such as the annual Aug Prep Gala and Gallery Night.

Middle School (6–8)
Our Middle School students build on their elementary foundation by expanding their technical skills and exploring art as a form of communication and self-expression. They are introduced to more advanced concepts of design and composition, with opportunities to experiment across a wide range of media. Students study and practice still life, landscape, perspective, and portrait drawing, along with painting and printmaking techniques. They also research well-known artists and their works while exploring creative fields such as game design and advertising. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to take creative risks, think critically about their artistic choices, and begin developing their own artistic voice. They can showcase their skills through the Scholastic Art Competition and at our end-of-year Gallery Night. Additionally, the after-school Manga Club gives students a chance to further develop their visual storytelling skills through the art of Japanese comics.

High School (9–12)
High School Visual Art students utilize the elements and principles of art and design in various mediums. They have the opportunity to work with drawing, painting, and ceramics to develop their own personal style and improve their communication skills. Students learn to effectively articulate their intentions and ideas behind their artwork, while also integrating a faith-based perspective on how to use their talents to glorify and serve God. As their skills grow, students can pursue advanced courses and extend their creativity through extracurricular clubs, competitions, and community events, including the Aug Prep Gala and Gallery Night.
