K-8 Academics at North

Children explore early math concepts through hands-on experiences that invite them to count, compare, sort, and build. Lessons focus on understanding numbers, patterns, shapes, spatial relationships, and measurement, while encouraging critical thinking, problem-solving, and a sense of curiosity about how and why math works.

Our K4 literacy program focuses on developing strong oral language, phonological awareness, and foundational reading skills. Students learn to listen carefully, recognize and play with sounds in words, and begin connecting spoken language to print. Daily routines include interactive storytime, rhyming, and sound-play activities that build phonemic awareness. Through meaningful conversations and thematic lessons, children grow in vocabulary, comprehension, and confidence as emerging readers and communicators.

Regular visits to the library allow students to enjoy read-alouds with the school librarian and select their own books to take home, nurturing comprehension, imagination, and a lifelong love of reading.

The focus is on exploration, imagination, and discovery. Children learn through hands-on play and creative problem solving as they build, test, and experiment using LEGO materials. These experiences help students explore how things move, balance, and connect while encouraging teamwork, storytelling, and communication. K4 students begin to see themselves as curious thinkers who can design, build, and make sense of the world around them, all through joyful, play-based learning.

Faith is woven into every aspect of the K4 experience. Through Godly Play, students listen to Bible stories using tangible materials and guided reflection, deepening their sense of wonder and connection to God.

Weekly Chapel brings the community together to sing, pray, and celebrate God’s love. Through stories and Scripture, students learn that they are deeply known and loved by God, and are called to show that love to others.

Using Eureka Math², students develop strong number sense, fluency, and problem-solving skills. Focus areas include addition and subtraction, place value understanding, and an introduction to multiplication and division concepts. Lessons emphasize conceptual understanding, math vocabulary, and real-world applications. Instruction is fully aligned to Wisconsin Standards.

Reading and writing are at the heart of our early-elementary experience. Using Heggerty Phonemic Awareness and Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA), students receive joyful, systematic instruction that builds confident, fluent readers and expressive writers. Daily lessons integrate phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension with rich read-alouds that build content knowledge and curiosity about the world. Writing begins through shared experiences and grows toward independent expression.

Using Inquiry Journeys, students explore their roles in families, schools, and communities, and expand into U.S. geography, history, and civic responsibility. Emphasis is placed on questioning, primary sources, and connections to lived experiences.

In grades K5–2, children become young scientists and engineers, exploring how the world works through observation, questioning, and experimentation. Our program follows the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), ensuring that students build strong inquiry skills and foundational science understanding. Using Mystery Science lessons and LEGO Education STEAM activities, students engage with real-world phenomena—investigating plants and animals, weather and seasons, light and sound, and how objects move. Each hands-on experience builds curiosity, confidence, and collaboration skills while helping students understand that science is not just something they learn about—it’s something they do.

Godly Play - Weekly Bible curriculum where students explore stories of Scripture with hands-on materials, guided reflection, and discussion, deepening their faith and wonder.

Chapel - Weekly worship gathering to pray, sing, and hear messages from teachers, leaders, and peers. Students explore different forms of prayer and strengthen their relationship with Jesus.

 

Using Eureka Math², students strengthen fluency with multiplication and division, deepen understanding of fractions and decimals, and apply problem-solving to real-world contexts. With Inquiry Journeys, students build skills as historians and geographers, studying U.S. history, world communities, geography, and civic engagement. Emphasis is placed on questioning, analyzing primary sources, and making connections between past & present.

Using Eureka Math², students build on elementary foundations and grow as mathematical thinkers. Instruction is hands-on, differentiated, and aligned with the Wisconsin Standards for Mathematics, ensuring that all learners develop a deep conceptual understanding and procedural fluency. Students learn to reason quantitatively, communicate their thinking, and apply math to real-world situations.

Concepts by Grade:
6th Grade: Students strengthen number sense and work confidently with ratios, unit rates, fractions, and decimals—including positive and negative numbers. They apply factors and multiples in problem solving, write and solve expressions and equations, explore area, surface area, and volume, and represent data using statistical measures and displays.

7th Grade: Learners deepen their understanding of proportional relationships and apply them to percent problems, scaling, and real-world contexts. They operate fluently with rational numbers, solve multi-step equations and inequalities, analyze linear relationships and slope, use geometric formulas for area, surface area, and volume, and explore probability and data variation.

8th Grade: Students extend their algebraic reasoning to functions, systems of equations, and modeling. They investigate transformations, congruence, and similarity in geometry, apply the Pythagorean Theorem, and work with irrational numbers, square and cube roots, and exponents. Learners calculate volumes of cylinders, cones, and spheres and apply mathematical models to interpret and solve authentic, real-world problems.

Inquiry-driven approach aligned to state standards and the C3 Framework. Students explore world history, including early civilizations (Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, Greece, Rome), geography, culture, systems of power, and belief. Culminating projects include debates, simulations, service initiatives, or presentations to demonstrate understanding and apply learning in real-world contexts.

Using Amplify Science, students engage in hands-on experiments, data analysis, and collaborative problem-solving across life, physical, and earth sciences—including engineering challenges that connect classroom learning to real-world applications. Lessons emphasize inquiry, evidence-based reasoning, and critical thinking, helping students develop a deep understanding of how science and engineering shape the world around them.

Building on the LEGO Education STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) foundation established in elementary school, middle school students apply their knowledge through participation in FIRST LEGO League (FLL)—a global program that challenges students to design, build, and program autonomous LEGO robots to complete missions based on real-world problems. Teams collaborate to research innovative solutions, present their ideas, and compete in a celebration of creativity, teamwork, and innovation.
